Taking these critical steps before you arrive at our Aliso Viejo clinic can relieve discomfort and save your tooth.
If a Tooth is Knocked Out
Handle the tooth ONLY by the crown (the biting surface), never the root. If dirty, rinse gently with water or milk. Try to place it back in the socket. If not possible, store it in a container of milk or your own saliva and come in immediately.
If the Tooth is Fractured
Rinse your mouth gently with warm saltwater. Save any broken tooth fragments. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to minimize facial swelling, and avoid biting down on that area.
If You Have Gum Swelling
Visible swelling near a tooth root indicates a dental abscess or deep infection. Apply cold compresses in 20-minute intervals. Do not apply hot packs or place aspirin directly on the gums, as it can burn the tissue.
