Gums that bleed regularly during brushing or flossing deserve attention. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums and is generally reversible with effective plaque control and professional care. Periodontitis involves loss of supporting bone and cannot be reversed, although it can be managed and slowed with treatment.
Signs to watch for
Red or swollen gums, persistent bleeding, gum recession, bad breath, loose or sensitive teeth, painful chewing, and a change in how your teeth fit together can all justify an evaluation. Periodontal disease may progress with few symptoms, so waiting for pain is unreliable.
What a periodontal evaluation can include
The clinician reviews your health history and risk factors, examines the gums, measures the spaces around teeth, checks mobility and bite, and uses dental imaging when indicated. Findings determine whether routine preventive care, improved home care, scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery, or referral is appropriate.

Protect your gums
If bleeding persists, schedule a gum-health exam at AVF Dental Group. Early assessment can clarify whether the problem is inflammation, technique, a restoration, or a more advanced periodontal condition.
