Clear aligners use a series of removable trays, while braces use brackets, wires, and other components attached to the teeth. Both can improve alignment, but treatment should start with an assessment of the teeth, gums, bite, jaw relationships, restorations, and the movements required.
Comparison at a glance
| Consideration | Clear aligners | Braces |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Less noticeable than metal braces | May be tooth-colored or metal |
| Removal | Removed for meals and cleaning | Remain in place during treatment |
| Hygiene | Requires cleaning trays and teeth | Requires brushing around brackets and wires |
| Compliance | Wear time is essential for planned movement | Appointments and care remain essential |
| Retention | Retainers are needed after treatment | Retainers are needed after treatment |
The compliance factor
An aligner works only while it is worn as prescribed. Repeatedly leaving it out, chewing with it, or failing to change trays as directed can extend treatment or compromise tracking. Braces do not require tray wear, but sticky foods, poor cleaning, and missed visits can also delay progress.
What happens after the teeth move?
Teeth can shift after orthodontic treatment. A retainer plan is part of treatment, not an optional extra. Your clinician will explain the retainer type, wear schedule, cleaning, replacement, and what to do if it no longer fits.
