Dental pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A toothache may come from decay, a cracked tooth, inflamed pulp, gum disease, trauma, or an abscess. Prompt evaluation can protect the tooth and help prevent a small problem from becoming more complex.

When to call a dentist today

Call for an urgent dental appointment for persistent or severe tooth pain, swelling around a tooth or gum, a lost or broken restoration, a dental injury, uncontrolled bleeding after dental treatment, or a tooth that has been knocked out.

When to seek medical emergency care

Go to an emergency department or call 911 for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, severe bleeding that will not stop, loss of consciousness, or major facial trauma. These symptoms can threaten the airway or indicate injuries beyond the tooth.

First steps while arranging care

Do antibiotics always fix a toothache?

No. The American Dental Association recommends definitive dental treatment for most pulpal and periapical pain and localized swelling in otherwise healthy adults; antibiotics are generally reserved for systemic involvement or selected higher-risk cases. Never start leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription.
