How to Choose a Dental Crown Material

A crown covers and protects a tooth that has lost substantial structure, has a large filling, has been treated with a root canal, or needs a restoration over an implant. There is no single best crown material for every tooth. The choice balances strength, esthetics, available space, occlusion, gum position, and how much healthy tooth can be preserved.

What the appointment should answer

Ask why a crown is needed instead of a filling or onlay, how much preparation is expected, which material fits the bite and smile zone, whether a temporary is needed, what cleaning tools are required, and how a night guard might protect the restoration if you grind or clench.

Same-day does not mean one-size-fits-all

Digital scanning and CAD/CAM milling may allow selected crowns to be designed and delivered in one visit. Same-day treatment still requires diagnosis, sound preparation, accurate fit, appropriate contacts, a stable bite, and follow-up.
