Routine dental care is designed to find disease early, reduce risk, and maintain teeth and gums—not to force the same schedule on every patient. The recommended interval depends on your history of cavities or gum disease, age, medications, pregnancy, smoking, dry mouth, restorations, and ability to clean at home.
What may happen at a visit
| Visit component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Health-history review | Identifies medications, medical conditions, pregnancy, allergies, and changes since the last visit |
| Tooth exam | Looks for decay, cracks, wear, failing restorations, and sensitivity causes |
| Gum assessment | Checks inflammation, bleeding, pocket depth, recession, and mobility |
| Cleaning | Removes plaque and calculus in areas home care cannot fully reach |
| X-rays when indicated | Shows areas not visible during a clinical exam |
| Prevention discussion | Tailors fluoride, home care, diet, guards, or recall timing |
How to prepare
Bring an updated medication and supplement list, mention changes in health or dry mouth, share your home-care routine honestly, and bring questions about sensitivity, grinding, insurance, or priorities.
Why a yearly visit may not be enough for everyone
The CDC recommends at least a yearly dental visit for adults, while also noting that additional visits may be recommended based on individual risk. Your dentist may recommend a shorter or longer interval after reviewing your findings.
