Sedation Dentistry: Overcoming Dental Anxiety Safely

Medically reviewed · 2 minute read

Dental anxiety is incredibly common. In fact, studies show that nearly 36% of people experience dental fear, with another 12% suffering from extreme dental phobia. This fear often leads patients to skip routine cleanings, turning simple cavities into severe toothaches that require root canals or extractions. Sedation Dentistry offers a safe, comfortable way to receive dental care without the stress or anxiety.

The Three Main Levels of Dental Sedation

Depending on your level of anxiety and the complexity of your procedure, we offer three main types of sedation:

1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas - Minimal Sedation): You inhale a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small mask over your nose. Within minutes, you feel relaxed, lightheaded, and calm. You remain fully awake and can communicate with the dentist. The gas wears off immediately after the mask is removed, allowing you to safely drive home.

2. Oral Conscious Sedation (Moderate Sedation): You take a prescribed sedative pill (typically Triazolam or Lorazepam) about an hour before your appointment. By the time you sit in the chair, you will feel deeply relaxed and drowsy. You remain conscious and responsive but will have little to no memory of the procedure.

3. IV Sedation (Deep Sedation): Administered intravenously directly into the bloodstream, this allows the dentist to adjust the sedation level continuously. You will drift into a light sleep, though you can still be awoken if needed. This option is ideal for long, complex surgeries like dental implant placement or wisdom tooth extractions.
