Professional Teeth Whitening: Safety, Results, and Sensitivity

Medically reviewed · 2 minute read

Whitening uses peroxide-based chemistry to lighten natural tooth structure. It does not change crowns, veneers, fillings, or implant restorations. An examination before whitening helps identify cavities, cracked teeth, gum recession, and existing sensitivity that may need attention first.

In-office vs. take-home whitening

OptionTypical experienceTrade-off
In-officeClinician-controlled gel and soft-tissue protectionFaster appointment-based brightening; sensitivity can occur
Custom take-home traysGradual whitening with a dentist-provided planMore control at home; requires consistency
Over-the-counter productsVarying concentrations and tray or strip designsConvenient, but fit and supervision vary

Managing sensitivity

Sensitivity is often temporary but should be reported if severe or persistent. Your dentist may adjust concentration, wear time, frequency, or recommend a desensitizing product. Never leave gel on longer than directed, and do not use household peroxide in your mouth.

Set expectations before whitening

Natural teeth may not whiten evenly, and deep internal discoloration may respond differently from surface stains. Because restorations retain their original shade, whitening is often planned before replacing visible crowns, veneers, or bonding.
