Dental Implants vs. Bridges: How to Replace a Missing Tooth

Medically reviewed · 2 minute read

A missing tooth can affect chewing, speech, appearance, and how neighboring teeth contact one another. An implant and a fixed bridge are both established options, but they solve the problem differently. The right choice depends on your bone, gum health, adjacent teeth, medical history, preferences, and budget.

Side-by-side comparison

ConsiderationDental implantFixed bridge
SupportImplant in the jaw supports a crownCrowns on neighboring teeth support a replacement tooth
Adjacent teethUsually preservedUsually prepared to receive crowns
BoneRequires adequate bone or a grafting planDoes not require an implant in the gap
Treatment timeIncludes healing and integration before final restorationOften completed in fewer treatment stages
Home careBrush, floss, and clean around the implant as instructedClean beneath the replacement tooth and around supporting teeth

What happens during implant treatment?

Planning may include digital scans and 3D imaging. The implant is placed in the jaw and allowed to heal while bone integrates with its surface. A connector and crown are then fitted. Timing varies with smoking, medical conditions, bone volume, and the need for grafting.

What happens during bridge treatment?

The supporting teeth are evaluated and prepared, an impression or digital scan is taken, and a temporary may protect the area while the final bridge is made. The bridge is checked for fit, contacts, bite, color, and cleanability before cementation.
