For a patient missing most or all teeth in one arch, implant-supported treatment can improve retention compared with a conventional removable denture. Two common paths are a removable overdenture that attaches to implants and a fixed full-arch bridge. The names describe designs, not a promise that one option fits everyone.
The main differences
| Feature | Implant-retained overdenture | Fixed full-arch bridge |
|---|---|---|
| Removal | Patient removes it for cleaning and usually overnight | Dentist removes it for maintenance |
| Cleaning | Clean the denture, attachments, and tissues daily | Clean under and around the bridge with specialized tools |
| Palate | Depends on design; many cover part of the palate | Usually leaves the palate open |
| Maintenance | Attachments and denture teeth can wear and need service | Hygiene visits and professional maintenance remain essential |
What determines candidacy?
Your clinician will review medical history, medications, smoking, bone volume, gum health, jaw relationships, hygiene access, and expectations. Some patients need extractions, periodontal treatment, bone grafting, or a temporary prosthesis before the final design. Implant surgery is still surgery, even when marketed as minimally invasive.
A realistic maintenance plan
Implants do not get cavities, but surrounding gums and bone can become inflamed. Daily cleaning, recall visits, a protective night guard when indicated, and repair of worn components help protect the result.
